There is a difference between having a budget and making price the most important thing in a business relationship.
A budget sets the parameters. Putting price first means choosing the lowest number before understanding the value behind it.
The order should be:
- Connection and fit.
- Quality of work and strategic thinking.
- Price.
Each matters. The order matters too.
Connection makes better work possible
Good work requires skill and value both ways.
Can you challenge each other? Do you share expectations about responsibility and success? Does the person doing the work understand what matters to your business?
That connection makes it possible to question a weak idea, raise a concern early and recommend a better direction.
When there is mutual respect and mutual value, you will spend energy improving the work. When conversations arise that become a negotiation over your value, that energy goes elsewhere.
Quality includes what you never have to fix
Some of the most valuable work is easy to overlook or is unseen.
It's the confusing message that never gets published. The campaign redirected before the money is spent. The detail someone catches because they have seen its consequences before.
You see the finished page, email or recommendation. Much of the value sits in the decisions behind it.
You are paying for the twenty years
A task that takes 30 minutes. Does that mean you are buying 30 minutes of value? No.
You are paying for the 20 years it took someone to become capable of doing that task well in 30 minutes.
Experience, pattern recognition and judgment make it possible to reach a useful answer without spending days finding the wrong ones.
Efficiency is part of what you hired them for. It should not become a reason to devalue their contribution.
If a budget needs to change, the scope should change with it. Expecting the same contribution for less money is asking one person to subsidise the relationship. The right partner should be able to explain their value. The right client should be willing to recognise it.
For those doing the work, pay attention.
If a client consistently puts price ahead of your contribution, they are telling you how they value it.
Believe them.
